Rachel Hansen, LCSW · EMDRIA Certified Therapist · Purity Culture and Religious Trauma

You Left the Rules. Your Body Didn't.

You don't believe it anymore. Maybe you haven't for years. You've read the books, untangled the theology, maybe even laughed about the purity rings and the object lessons.

And still, something tightens when your partner reaches for you. You go somewhere else during sex, or you feel a wave of guilt afterward that makes no sense to you now. You check your outfit twice before you leave the house, still scanning for who might think you're asking for attention. Or you’ve spent years policing your own thoughts, convinced that wanting someone makes you dangerous. Or you were taught the problem wasn’t what you did, but who you are.

You're not confused about what you believe. Your nervous system just learned the lesson first, and it learned it well.

What Purity Culture Trauma Looks Like in Adults

Maybe you heard some version of these:

"Don't be a stumbling block."

"Bounce your eyes."

"Every relationship gives away a piece of your heart."

"Your future spouse is watching how you live right now."

"Modesty protects the men around you."

"Love the sinner, hate the sin."

Years later, it tends to look like this:

  • Shutting down, freezing, or dissociating during intimacy, even with a partner you trust

  • Guilt, panic, or crying after sex, including sex inside the marriage you were promised would make it holy

  • Treating your body like a liability to manage instead of a place you live

  • Moving fast toward physical closeness because being wanted feels like being safe

  • Believing your desire makes you dangerous, or carrying porn shame and performance anxiety that crowd out real connection

  • A quiet belief that you're used, too much, or damaged in a way other people aren't

  • For LGBTQ+ adults, a deeper layer: being taught that who you are, not just what you do, was the problem, and still hiding parts of yourself even in relationships that are safe

Most purity culture conversations center women, and the harm to women was real. But men were taught their own bodies were a threat to everyone around them, and LGBTQ+ people were usually left out of the conversation entirely, except as the warning. If that was you, this work is for you too.

Purity culture wasn't only evangelical. I work with people from evangelical, LDS, Catholic, Jehovah's Witness, and other high-control traditions where sexuality and worth were tied together.

Why Understanding It Hasn't Made It Go Away

Purity culture didn't work through persuasion. It worked through shame, belonging, and spiritual authority, delivered by trusted adults while you were young. Your body stored those lessons as survival information about what keeps you loved and safe.

That's why insight alone rarely touches it. You can know the theology was harmful and still feel the shame in your body. Healing isn't about convincing your mind. It's about helping your nervous system learn the threat is over. For many men, that threat was often desire itself. For LGBTQ+ adults, it was being fully seen.

Purity Culture Trauma vs. Religious Trauma

Purity culture is one form of religious trauma, but it lands somewhere specific: your body, your sexuality, and your closest relationships. Plenty of people who don't think of themselves as religiously traumatized still carry it. If what you're healing from is broader, like spiritual abuse, control, or losing a community, my religious trauma therapy page covers that work.

How Therapy for Purity Culture Works

We work with what your body holds, not just the story you can tell about it.

  • EMDR to reprocess the specific memories and messages that formed these patterns: the youth group talk, the object lesson, the first time you felt ruined. Once processed, they stop firing in the present.

  • Somatic, nervous-system work so safety becomes something you feel, not just something you understand.

  • Parts work for the part of you that still polices your body, your clothes, your desire, or your identity, and is exhausted from doing it.

You don't have to know what you believe now to start. I have no agenda for your faith, in either direction.

In my practice, 83% of the specific memories we target in EMDR fully resolve within two 90-minute sessions, based on 179 targets tracked. See my EMDR results.

Meet Rachel Hansen, LCSW

I'm Rachel Hansen, LCSW, an EMDRIA Certified Therapist licensed in Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Jersey. My clinical focus is religious trauma, cult recovery, and the high-control environments that shape how people relate to their own bodies.

I work with high-functioning women, men, and LGBTQ+ adults who look fine from the outside and are tired of managing shame on the inside. I understand the purity culture from the inside, along with all the abuses that it hid so well from the outside world.

What to Expect

  1. Free 20-minute consultation. We talk about what you're carrying and whether I'm the right fit.

  2. Getting grounded first. Early sessions build enough steadiness that your body has somewhere to land before we process anything.

  3. EMDR processing. We work through the memories and beliefs driving the shame, in 90-minute sessions or EMDR intensives if you want to move faster or are traveling to Las Vegas.

  4. Integration. Building a relationship with your body, your desire, and your relationships that belongs to you.

This is trauma therapy, not sex therapy. If specific sexual concerns remain after we've processed the shame underneath them, I'll help you find a certified sex therapist.

Purity Culture Therapy FAQ

No questions too weird or forbidden...

1. What is purity culture trauma?

It's the lasting shame, fear, and disconnection that can follow growing up in a religious culture that tied your worth to sexual purity, modesty, and gender roles. It often shows up in intimacy, body image, and relationships long after the beliefs are gone.

2. I'm married and still struggling with sex. Could that be purity culture?

Often, yes. Many people were taught sex was dangerous until the wedding day, then expected to flip a switch. The body doesn't flip switches. Guilt, freezing, or avoidance in a safe marriage is one of the most common reasons people come to me.

3. Do I have to leave my faith to do this work?

No. Some clients have left religion entirely, some are rebuilding a faith of their own, and some aren't sure. Therapy focuses on the shame in your body, not on what you should believe.

4. Can EMDR help with sexual shame?

Yes. EMDR reprocesses the specific memories and messages that installed the shame, so they lose their charge. Clients often notice changes in their body before they can explain them.

5. Do you work with men and LGBTQ+ clients?

Yes. Purity culture taught men that their desire made them dangerous, and taught many LGBTQ+ people that their identity was the defect. Both carry real, treatable harm.

6. Is this sex therapy?

No. This is trauma therapy for the shame underneath. If you need sex therapy afterward, I'll help you find the right referral.

7. Do you take insurance?

Thrive Well Therapy is a private-pay practice, and I don't bill insurance directly.

Your Body Was Never the Problem

You were taught to manage your body like a threat. You don't have to keep doing that. Whether you're ready to start or just have questions, the first step is a free 20-minute consultation.
